I have recently upgraded to Vista Ultimate (clean install) from XP. My machines on my network Wake-On-LAN at midnight everyday to run backup and Anti-Virus scan then shutdown at 4am. I run Retrospect Express 7.5 for backup on each machine and a shutdown command is issued to other PCs from the one machine that stays awake. This all works fine with UAC disabled. With UAC enabled the backup does not appear to launch, it certainly does not run. Likewise the remote shutdown appears to be ignored with UAC on. I assume it is desirable to enable UAC.
Can UAC be made compatible with auto execution of apps and remote shutdown (or remote execution of any apps)? In the end I still had trouble launching Retrospect even with UAC disabled. A Retrospect auto-launch would run as System rather than as User as the function to login as User is not functional under Vista. Retrospect auto-launched but seemed unable to run and complete properly. The workaround (keeping UAC disabled) was to 'manually' launch Retrospect using the scheduler, 5 mins before Retrospect is set to auto-launch itself.
As it is already manually running under the User the job runs at the set time and completes properly. I will update again if I can ever get this all working with UAC enabled. Hello amosnov, Thank you for using Microsoft Windows Vista Forums.
I have found some information that I hope will assist. Looks like to change you would need to go into Group Policy.
Please let us know status. User Account Control Overview When the administrator needs to run applications that perform administrative tasks ('administrator applications'), this version of Windows prompts the users to change or “elevate” their security context from a standard user to an administrator. This default administrator user experience is called Admin Approval Mode. In this mode, applications require specific permission to run as an administrator application (an application that has the same access as an administrator).
When an administrator application is starting, by default a User Account Control message appears. If the user is an administrator, the message gives a choice to allow the application to start or to prevent it from starting. If the user is a standard user, the user can enter the user name and password of an account that is a member of the local Administrators group. Note: The behavior of the User Account Control message can be changed by using Group Policy. For more information, see When designing an application, the software developer should identify the application as either an administrator application or a standard user application.
If an application has not been identified as an administrator application, Windows treats it as a standard user application. However, administrators can also mark an application to be treated as an administrator application.
